Mrs. Theresa Spaulding-Horn

Welcome to First Grade!

Parents,

Please check your child's planner nightly and sign the planner after the homework is complete. Please write the book your child is reading under the read 15 section.

Spelling:  Please see your child's planner for this weeks words. A new spelling board will be sent home every month. Please keep this in your portfolio. Spelling tests will be given on Friday mornings. Please be sure to study throughout the week.

Reading: We will have reading groups. Your child will bring home a book each week. Please read and practice the book every night. We will be using these daily so please remind your child to put them in their portfolio nightly.

Journal:  Each week your child will have a "journal"  writing assignment . Some assignments may require two weeks. I am available to work with your child in the mornings beginning at 7:30 if they are having trouble with an assignment. All writing assignments must be completed at school.  Please discuss the writing with your child nightly.

Math: This year, we will be using Sadliers' Progress in Mathematics. We will also supplement with activities from other resources. Your child will have math homework Monday thru Thursday. Your child is also required  learn his/her addition and subtraction facts throughout the first grade year. Each week, we will have a test over an addition or subtraction fact.

The easiest way for students to add if they do not know their math facts is counting on. For example; If I give the problem 7 plus 3 the student should start with the highest number. They would put up three fingers and count on from 7 putting a finger down each time they say a number. Please review this concept nightly with your child.

We will have Math time test. A schedule will be sent home on Parents night.  There will be 30 problems. Students have three minutes to complete the test. Please review all previous addition and subtraction facts. Students should have memorized all addition facts by the end of November. We will begin subtraction in January.

"What's in a bag?"  Each week your child will bring in an object and place it in a small brown lunch bag. Your child will write three clues about the object.  The object will be related to something we are studying. This is an extremely important part of the reading/writing and oral speaking curriculum. A "theme" schedule will be sent home. Please refer to the schedule for the topic of the week.
