Mrs. Marianne McGhee

Welcome to Second Grade!

I am so excited to be teaching your child this year!  Second Grade is an amazing year and the students will learn many wonderful things. I believe that life always gives us something new to learn! We will also be encouraging your child to become more independent as the year goes on.

A little bit about me - I attended Villa for grades 1-12.  This is my 21st year teaching and my 11th year at Villa!

Below you'll find more information about what we will be learning, our schedule, and volunteering in the classroom. Please contact me if you have questions.

Language Arts

We have a new book each week.  We will learn many reading skills like cause and effect, sequencing, story elements, authors purpose, and more.  We have a weekly spelling list that we differentiate based on your child's needs.  For grammar and writing we are working on parts of speech, proper punctuation, creating good sentences, writing a paragraph, and more.

Math

We are currently working with adding numbers to 100, regrouping numbers, and solving word problems.

Religion

We will do many exciting things this year in Religion.  We will be preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion.  We will also have two in-school Retreat Days and will learn about the many gifts God has given us.

Portfolio

Please remember to check your child's portfolio daily.  The only papers that should be removed from their portfolio are those in the graded work section.  There will be several times when we ask students to keep ongoing work in their portfolio and they will need this for the next class period.  It is difficult for the students to participate without their materials.

Volunteering

Please be aware that all parents/volunteers that have any contact with students either in a classroom/school setting or field trip capacity must have a background check, VIRTUS training classes, and their training bulletins must be up-to-date. There are no exceptions.   Please contact the office if you have questions or want to become VIRTUS trained.

Planners
Students will be writing in their planners everyday.  Please remember to check your child's planner every night and to initial it at the bottom.  This is a great way for us to communicate with each other and for you to see what your child has for homework.
