Goodbye Exchange Students!
Sep 04, 2019
We are sad to say goodbye to the students and teachers from Colegio Sagrada Familia in Granada, Spain. The group came to Villa Madonna Academy as part of a cultural and language exchange. The exchange started in the spring when Villa students stayed in Granada with host families, and the students who hosted them are arrived in Kentucky in August.
They spent time taking classes and interacting with their host students as well as other students on campus. They also took a daily English class. In addition to brushing up their English skills, the Spanish students went to a Reds game, the Kentucky Horse Park, the Art Museum, Krohn Conservatory, and they attended a school dance. One of the highlights for some of the students was eating Chick-fil-A chicken. The students described it as "the best chicken in the world."
This language immersion program helps Villa students earn the Global Seal of Biliteracy. The Academy is the only school in Northern Kentucky to offer the biliteracy seal. This program recognizes those who have achieved literacy in English and a second language. Students who wish to earn it must take either the Advanced Placement test in Spanish or French or take the Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP) test. Villa is the only school in Northern Kentucky to have been approved for the Global Seal of Biliteracy. Students are also able to participate in the Global Citizenship Certificate Program or GCCP. It recognizes students who have met certain criteria to expand their global perspectives. They learn about world issues, participate in global service programs, and learn to communicate with diverse groups of people. This program takes two to four years to complete and culminates with a certificate that recognizes the achievement of a high level of global literacy. Both the Global Seal of Biliteracy and GCCP are part of Villa's efforts to prepare students for the global economy.
We are so pleased to have been lucky enough to share this experience and the Benedictine value of hospitality with the visiting students. We look forward to our next exchange!
